This is a short video on an amazing human being, Daniel Tammet from Bristol, England, who apparently has Savant Syndrome and can make insane calculations in his mind (even surpassing several calculators).

Amazing, he is able to function in society while he has savant syndrome.

I could do the decimal one it is not very hard. I am only 15. The 34^4 would be pretty hard though. and easier way to do and what I imagine he did was take 40x34 every time and just subtract 204 because 40x34=34x34+204 and he could just do that 4 times and get the answer. It would take me a little while but I could do it. The date thing he can do though is quite amazing. I am in all regular class's in school and I am around a 1.6-1.8 GPA but Mental Math is a very strong point of mine.

what he has basically came from a single mutated gene.Just like mutated genes branched us humans off from monkey's evolutionary tree.mutations basically happen in living things,including humans,when there is a need to adopt to nature.therefore,if present day humans keep push themselves trying to study complex math or arithmetics,it's more than likely for future generations to have similar brains like this guy's!!

Well i in every 150 kids are autistic....and a percent of that 100 are savants. Many Asperger's cases are never diagnosed....and not ever savant is a numbers savant.

Not necessarily. That depends if you think sexual preference is learned, chosen, or it comes natually (at birth). If it is indeed at birth, which seems odd, but look at him, then it could have a tie....

IT IS NOT ABOUT PRACTICING, idiots. it's a psychological condition that he happens to be blessed with. Its not a normal thing to be able to do 37 x 37 x 37 x 37 in under a minute. obviously the man is a genius. but the condition has some perks too, such as not being able to learn other things as fast or as much as others. so it's good and bad in different ways.

i agree and disagree at the same time i wouldent say we have lost math were just more dependent on thecnology to do simple every day calculations although i dont live in the U.S i believe that the modern man and woman is more dependent on thecnology than befor and is also more ignorent which makes them amazed alot more easily

I completely agree, it's all about practice. My Dad teaches math at a University, so I was around math more but I didn't even go to college... I just have done basic math a lot at work and in life. We have lost math in the U.S., now every1 thinks it's amazing when someone can carry a number and divide in their head.

I'm no Einstein and I can do that. It is basic math... mulitpulcations/division... there is even a name for it(thinking it all out). Someone who really is "special" like Kim Peek will tell you the answer immediately... which I can't do but I can think it out, I'm sure you can too.

Daniel Tammet is a arithmetic genius compared to Albert Einstein, but Einstein is general math genius compared to Daniel Tammet. I agree with Drum44er, Tammet never proved that he is general math smart, he is just doing huge calculations (it's still impressive)!

why does people keep on hating on this guy? i mean we should all be thankful he's sharing his brain with us. can you imagine all the traveling and the studying he's done (1 new language in 1 week) this guy had so scientist can study him? he doesn't need to do all those you know. but he's doing it anyway. the research they're doing on his brain might help ordinary people like us become more smarter in the future.

numerically hes probably smarter than einstien, but einstien overall was a theorist and did more physics equations and such than straight up calculating numbers...

He is amazing and such a kind person. My understanding is, despite this wonderful talent, and having the diagnosis of aspberger's autism, he has learned how to become a more sociable person. Yet, he explains, also, in his writings on the Internet, that he has very fixed compulsions that must be done at certain times of the day. He also explains that he can't drive, cannot handle the stimuli of supermarkets and basically needs to stay home, most of the time, to feel comfortable. Yin and Yang.

if you would have read his book you would know that he did indeed sit down and drill it into his head, it was not unconscious. he spent weeks trying to learn and memorize all 22,514 digits of pi. he used his synesthesia to create landscapes of the numbers. in no way was his accomplishment unconscious.
