Providing Practical Aid
Aid and relief work, as an expression of God's love and concern for needy people in many countries Doulos visits, takes many forms, including medical aid, construction projects, major donations of literature, as well as spontaneous gifts of food and clothing. In the past, ship personnel have donated textbooks and reference volumes to schools, libraries, colleges and universities, distributed medical or food supplies, renovated clinics and orphanages, and assisted in the construction of schools and church buildings.

Sudan - Bringing help
13 Apr, 2005 ::

Doulos crewmembers built 10 classrooms for two schools in Sudan. A steady stream of crewmembers travelled to Port Sudan almost daily to build the five classrooms for each school there. "We didn't have good rooms for the children but we do now!" said the principal of one school. The headmaster of the other school was also very pleased with the new additions to his institution. "Thank you for building the classrooms," he said. "We might even change the name of the school to 'Doulos' in the future!"

Djibouti -Healing hands
5 May, 2005 ::

Dr Robert Thiel does a lot of volunteer work to serve communities in Djibouti. One of the communities where he offers free medical aid is a squatter settlement called Arhiba Deux, where many of the residents are refugees from Somalia. Living conditions are dismal, with much of the housing constructed from scraps of wood and plastic. Five nurses from Doulos accompanied Dr Thiel to the area on two occasions. They helped him dispense de-worming tablets and multivitamins and treated minor injuries. "Many of the children there had inflamed eyes and open wounds," said Heidi Kraft (Germany). The ship's nurses sometimes felt overwhelmed by the crowds of people, but hoped God's love would shine through them.

India - Partners In Practicing Medicine
11 May, 2006 :: Chennai, India

"It was so good to go with them because it's an ongoing work and not just a one-time visit." Conny Backfisch (Germany) serves on board Doulos as a nurse, and in Chennai she was excited to partner alongside Christian Mission Charitable Trust (CMCT) in their existing medical work. In Chinnakuppam, a fishing village hit by the tsunami, medical staff from Doulos assisted CMCT staff to provide health check-ups and medication to the villagers. The presence of workers from the ship also allowed eye-tests to take place. Other crew visited Alapakkam, a leprosy colony. While medical staff used their professional skills, other crewmembers shared their time and compassion with people living in isolation because of their illness. Dr. Karen Trewinnard (UK), one of the doctors serving on board Doulos immediately saw that helping hands from the ship allowed more people to receive treatment in a shorter space of time. For her part, CMCT Director Dr. Colleen Redit was delighted with the benefits of the partnership. "We were so impressed with the dedication of the Doulos staff," she notes. "They encouraged us, as I believe we encouraged them."
