Performed by Jay Webler,at a local Atlanta private school, during a teacher recital. The "History of Drums" is a solo that goes from Baby Dodds to Steve Gadd, with Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, etc. in between. This was a solo that I developed when, at the insistance of Rebecca,(one of my 5 children, who thought it would be a neat, I entered a local contest. I won the contest and have since gone back into full time private teaching.
EXPLANATION OF SOLO:
The popular music of our day did not just pop up one day out of nowhere. The same is true for the styles of Drumming. As with life everything has a beginning in this world. This solo captures 100 years of drumming styles in 8 minutes starting with the old military drumming at the turn of the century:

1. The beginning is a prelude which I use to prepare for what is about to happen. The patterns I am playing on the cymbals are based on a 6/8 March tempo.
2. Upon the conclusion of the prelude I break into a strong 6/8 cadence which is familiar to everybody. This cadence is basic rhythm which early Dixieland drummers based their style on. Coming out of the cadence I begin with the father of Dixieland drumming, Baby Dodds, using a common 2 beat rhythm played on the snare drum. In the old days the drummers did not use ride cymbals as they are used today. The rhythms were played on the snare drum, Sock Cymbal, wood blocks, or anything else they had to hit. As I am playing the Baby Dodd's style I begin to slip in the styles of Gene Krupa, who was credited with bringing drums to the forefront. After a brief stint on the floor tom, playing the famous solo from Sing, Sing, Sing, I begin to go into the styles of Buddy Rich who a drummer that took Big Band Drumming to new levels. After going through a number of the typical Buddy Rich Drum Licks, I close this section with a bunch of flash and crash drumming which seems to please the crowd greatly.
3. When I begin playing the ride cymbal I have made a move into a quasi be-bop style of drumming which followed the swing era. During this section I go through the styles of Max Roach and Elvin Jones. During this period drummers began to develop more sophisticated 4 way co-ordination patterns. I begin to develop this as I begin on the ride cymbal again. With the addition of each limb of my body I bring a different rhythmic pattern based upon the swing rhythm. Upon bringing in the bass drum I am playing 4 different rhythms at one time. I come out of this and go into an explosive Big band style of drumming.
4. I immediately leave the bebop style and go into a Rock Rhythm during which I play various styles of rhythms that are popular in that vain. During the Rock section I include a modified version of a famous drum solo from the Rock Group Iron Butterfly.
5. After playing some transitional rhythms I begin to move into the fusion era. During this era the style called "linear playing" was being developed. I demonstrate this era by playing a section of a piece recorded by Chick Corea who used Steve Gadd as his drummer. Steve Gadd was perhaps the most famous proponent of linear playing. In this style no two limbs are striking any part of the drum set at one time. It has also been revered to as "melodic playing". Upon completed the linear phase I begin to move into Latin phase. This phase has been used quite extensively over the last 30 years and is still being developed. A Samba rhythm is being played on the bass drum while other Latin rhythms are played on the snare drum with the left hand.
6. After completing the "fusion" era I break into the finale with a series of cymbals crashes and a decrescendo on the snare drum. Solo drummers such Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson would often, during long drum solos, go into a open to close (slow to fast), single stroke roll to show off their speed on the drums and exite the audience. I choose to use this technique while maintaining the same tempo that I started with. Using rhythmic notation I go from quarters notes all the way to 32nd notes using single strokes before I begin my final "flash and crash" scene. After completing the crashing cymbals I break into the a quick demo of the 3rd movement of Buddy Rich's West Side Story. This makes the transition back to my original 6/8 rhythm very easy. After completing this I return to the original 6/8 rhythm which brings me right back to where I started from.

Again I would like to thank everyone for the positive input I have received on this video. However, because I direct my students to this sight I am disabling comments on my channel as well as to my videos. Postings to my channel about being lonely or other sexually explicit material is not acceptable. I do not check my channel everyday, and I cannot risk having one of my students go to my channel and see this garbage. Once again the few ruin it for the many.

I play in a wide variety of situations when I perform. Usually it is Big Band, or Jazz trios. In my Air Force days I played in various band formations including: Rock, Concert, Jazz, Big Band, Marching, and Bag Pipe Corp. I was stationed with some excellent drummers who were usually specialists in certain areas and I picked there brains every chance I had.

boeingman777

Very nicely done Jay!! I also play the drums and enjoyed your style very much. :-)

anaplat

Jay, I have a new drum hero: you. You show the best of the old school and new. I hear the best of many players in you. Thank you.

red666alert

so what band you perform during your days sir..is it hendrix or what..

OmnipotentWings

with all those time signature changes, u should try schism very smooth changes, almost didn't notice em

Thanks for the kind words. The solo is based upon my knowledge of the various styles of music. I don't have any sheets of music in front of, although I am an very good reader. When it comes to drum set solos based upon styles I prefer to improvise on the idea. Sometimes I make up tunes in my head while playing to help me create more variations and to keep from becoming to montonous.

gdesrosiers

Sir - you're an inspiration! That was very nice and brought me back to the days when I used to play daily. I sold my set when I moved from my parents place and was living in apartments. Now that I own a home you've got me thinking where I can squeeze them :)

moontheloon1982

wow , you still got the energy thats for sure...I'm obviously impressed with your technical ability, but also your arrangement is phenomenal. It has a great flow to it, I didnt hear one awkward transition. It sustains itself as it's own piece of music, unlike a lot of drum solos. It actually feels like it going somewhere. I appreciate a drummers ear for music just as much as how fast he can move his hands. You seem to have mastered both.

AeroAstro

That was great, i love the way you truly know what you are doing, and how you mix 6/8 and 8/8. Are you a professional? Do you have music sheets infront of you or are you remembering the whole thing or improvising some of it loosely based on music sheets?

tdubya21

very nice jay, well thought out.

sumothecat

great stuff,I can't wait

philbertdog2

man, very creative dude! loved it through and through man! keep rocking!

envy974

U are too good i like it

jaywebler

No, I started when I was 12. Time is going fast enough as it is. I am 54.

AjUl3z

I loved it, (Favorites) So you started when you were 18?

jaywebler

The 20, 18, and Hats were Sabian XS. The 16 is a Sabian Hand Hammered. The only one I have know is the Sabian HH. I now have a 21" Sweet Ride, a Bosphorus Flat Top, and an 18" Zildian Crash. The Sabians served their pupose after I wore out my other cymbals. After hearing this video I felt that they were to bright for the applications I find myself in. I will say that they cut through a Big Band very well.

jaywebler

On an off for about 42 years. That is if you include the fact that my first snare drum was a garbage turned upside down with paper clips and cut up arrows for drum sticks. I used to try to figure out Max Roach, and Buddy Rich figures with that set up.

ledhead71490

how long have you been drumming?

benny111111

webler mate that was class. I love the cripsy military sounding snare in particular but it was a great solo as a whole. If they're sabian cymbals which type are?

jaywebler

I don't remember using any triple stroke rolls. I usually use doubles or singles. I save the triples for special effects and the styles that I played here really didn't call for them. Thanks for the kind words

Kcausby

Are you playing triples or doubles on your open rolls? They are amazing. Your speed on the bass drum pedal is unreal! Also, I really enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd sections of your solo. Thanks for posting.

mikosoft

Wow, very nice. That comprehensive commentary helps alot, because, some rhythms are quite hard to distinguish. Still a great solo and a great walkthrough.

Mal1907

You are great grandpa

dh222

favorited...that's really all i have (or can find) to say.

Matador4439

I heard that in the dictionary under drummer and Drumming, the definition has recently been edited to say just two words: "Jay Webler"

jaywebler

I would like to thank you and everyone else for the kind comments. I am somewhat overwhelmed by them.

tutuyin

love your drumming.

gretschdrummer1218

I hear you on that, I had the same issue with my drums in regards to the unwanted "singing", I guess we both have diva drums! I got a set of coated studio x heads(also by aquarian) and I haven't had a problem since. Also I'd like to just say once again this solo is amazing both in the composition itself and the execution. This really is what drumming is all about.

jaywebler

At that time I was using plain ambassadors on the Toms. I have Powerstroke 3 batter and resonator on the Bass Drum. The snare had a evans Genara HD head. That was a good head for this performance but it's not sensitive enough for the other things I do. I have since replaced the tom heads with Acquarin Focus X. I had to used some external muffling on the toms with the Ambassadors because these drums really sing. I don't have to do that with the Focus X. They sound even better now.

gretschdrummer1218

This is really an amazing solo. I was wondering what kind of heads you use, and if you are using any kind of special dampening system on your bass drum. I really love your sound, it's actually quite inspiring. Thanks for sharing!

thbeatgozon

OH YEAH!
That's musical inspiration! Fab-u-lous!

asdfbandit

Very nice drum solo. You deffinetly have your own style. I love that in a drummer. Great drumming, awesome technique, and very nice set. I enjoyed it.

carpantra

lot of technique! and a elegant move when hit the crashes... heheheh good job man!

showncross

Mr.Webler let me start by saying Wow! I tip my hat sir.
I'm a 34yr old drummer who lost his way and has not played for some years. But to see you play like that makes me want to get some sticks and make up for lost time. Thanks

jaywebler

The toms and bass are Sonor Phonics. The Snare Drum is a Mapex Maple Deluxe. They are extremely heavy drums but I love their sound. Thanks for the kind words.

plonkey

what kind of kit is that sir? it looks a bit like old Luds or Rogers to me sounds great!.Awesome drumming!

insanedrummer89

Very interesting..i need to praactice my value and technic a lil bit more..thankyou for helping me realise that.

Nato61

YES!

kakkoiguitaaplayer

amazing O_O

sliterchery

I'm a hard rock and metal fan but i know this stuff is 25 million times harder to play than the stuff double bass drummers play. It's the reason my my whole band is switching to groove because it's a heck of a lot harder. and this solo is crazy man you killed it. I was dumbfound!

2dchris

Very good my man! i could pick out most of the drummers styles from that :)

DominickBlack

I'm a drummer of 17 years and I have to tell you that this really is top shelf stuff and it really feels good to listen to it. This will go in a place of honor in my fav list....

Jacdin

Absolutely top quality with good precision

drummercouk

Fan-bloody-tastic! Thank you!

Madmartigan1
