this a short film made by jem cohen featuring elliott smith. the film was recorded october 17-20, 1996 in portland, oregon, and released in 1997.

lucky three was made available on kill rock stars' video fanzine #1 release (1999, out of print). smith described lucky three as "a cross between a video and a documentary, but actually being neither of the two."

Is the acoustic song at the begining and in between Thirteen and Angeles an acoustic version of Baby Britan?

Maybe some improvement in mixing and mastering but the same performance, per the Thumbsucker liner notes.

It's an early/alternate acoustic version of Baby Britain. There's a great cover of this version on YouTube...search "Baby Britain Lucky Three". Enjoy.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure the Thumbsucker one is a more polished studio version...

I was on the phone with a friend to whom I had sent some stuff and said "I'll make you an fanatic in four minutes. Go listen, really listen, to Plainclothes Man." I pointed her to a particular live version. She called back awestruck, quoting the song and saying it was the best thing she ever heard. So I'd say the gritty stuff might be the way to turn people on. But everyone's different. The main thing is to have them realy listen--not in the car or as background, but real intent listening.

Turns out the Lucky 3 and Thumbsucker versions are one and the same. I'm comparing to New Moon version right now. Best-ever might also be Sweden '98, a great soundboard recording. The song fits him like a glove.

jackwhiteyum- I think it's all about who you recommend it to. For example, someone who enjoys mellow folk music (or good taste in music in general) will probably enjoy Elliott, where as someone who loves Miley Cyrus will most likely not. I've mostly gotten positive results with my friends. But it can't be denied that Elliott's music was raw and emotional and beautiful. But I think it all has to do with personal taste. Though I find it hard to believe people don't like his music.

okay quick question. if anyone here has ever tried to recommend elliott's stuff to other people, have you generally gotten positive or negative results? whenever i show his songs to my friends they laugh and say i have terrible taste in music..

I just love Elliott Smith.
It all started with hearing great songs like Alameda, Speed Trials and Between the Bars, but with time it just grow into something huge!
For every single day i become a hugher fan of him.
I got all of these albums with him or with his earlier band Heatmiser on my iPod:
Either/Or, Elliott Smith, Figure 8, New Moon, From a basement on the hill, XO, Roman Candle, Division Day and No Name #6, Dead Air, Yellow no 5, Mic city sons and at last Cop And Speeder.

Wow, been a while since I've listened to these. Bars was the first song I heard of Smith's and it still sounds amazing. However, I think my favorite thing about this video is how he cracks a smile at the very end!

It's an instrumental version of Baby Britain. This question comes up a fair bit in this thread, and it's not surprising because it's such a great piece. Does anybody know when it was recorded?

Great video. Really great. Most of the shots are undeniably Portland, but part of it looks like Everett...but I'm sure it's not.

The point I was making was that it is pathetic to come here or to visit another video with the sole intention/purpose of insulting the artist and the artist's fans which seemed to fly over your head. Though I disagree with your statement, atleast about "My chemical romance" but that really bares no relevance to what I was trying to say.

first off fall out boy is POP. my chemical romance ... POP. emo = rites of spring ... mineral kind of ... tguk ... kind of ... it was a post hardcore movement that its early stages sounded more like hardcore/punk music. elliott smith was more of a folk artist. he started off in a punk band way back in the day though that was "emoish"

there's nothing wrong with an artist trying to inspire a feeling or sending a message. thats art. and i guess you could say that art is somewhat manipulative if you want to use that word

Nothing to be ashamed of. I'm sure everyone here has cried listening to his music at some point or another. :) And I completely agree. Seems like Elliott wrote about and communicates exactly what he was feeling at the time whereas you can tell some other song writers are intentionally trying to inspire a certain emotion and send some stupid message. Can be construed as manipulative almost. It's all about expression, not about getting someone to feel a certain way IMO.

Thanks. I try not to listen to those bands, I'm too old. But I was a really stupid teenager myself so I wouldn't try to lift myself up by putting them down. Anyway, as I listen to Smith every day I realize he had to make music to live. A real artist. Real music communicates real feeling, which is what gets to people and makes them cry. (Yes I cry when listening to Elliott's music)!

Lol. It shouldn't matter to you. Really winds me up when people come to Elliott's videos just to have a dig at him and his fans. I hate "fall out boy" and "My chemical romance", I think their fans are pathetic emo teenagers who can't quite grasp what real music is. Yet, I don't go to their videos purposefully to insult them. That's just sad.
