Well put. This guy's sound comes from his gut. How many other "technically" great drummers out there don't have that instinct? Way too many. Phil ROCKS.
What's with the piss poor editing? Count how many seconds each shot goes before cutting!!!
absolutly amazing.I love Phil Collins and his music i can hear evry day. Both 2 of the greatest talents. Thanks
It's not backwards to a lefty though!
awesome. i love this guys. the worlds best drummers!
Phil's drumming isn't as much techinical as it is natural. When you hear Peart or Palmer, you KNOW it's technical brilliance. When you hear Phil, it has a natural flow that doesn't seem forced at all.
super
This is so much better than the 2007 drum duet at the Turn it On Again tour...
Great vid of a very good drummer, but technically there's only one drummer the no one can beat, 8 times voted the world's best in the seventies. Look at his "Tank" solo. The name is Carl Palmer...
Freaking A !!!!
Ive loved this video since my dad showed me the tour DVD lol, i finally found it YEY!!
My apologies...I, too, agree that Tech is not necessarily better. Sometimes simplicity is better...or adding subtle nuances depending on the composition of the song and how 'tasty' it fits. And yeah, I agree with your double bass comment...sometimes can be over-rated or over-played, especially when applied out of context with the feel of the song or distracts from it. Now Virgil Donati? He does with one foot what many struggle to do with two...what an animal...lol
I do take into account they are from two different genres, (although alot of DT and early Genesis are both considered 'Progressive')but point well taken. They are both excellent drummers in their own right. As far as Neil Peart goes, I have always been a big admirer, especially in the early Rush days. I was a bit dissapointed for awhile, though, because it just seemed that he kinda stayed in a comfort zone and didn't push his own 'envelope'. Nonetheless, a very talented drummer.
On another occasion, I saw Virgil play with Cab when they headlined at a small club called Mo's Alley in Santa Cruz, Ca. Totally mindblowing...and on a personal level truely a great guy. The club had emptied except for myself and a couple of my friends. He came out and spent a good hour or more just chatting it up and signing DVDs/CDs/Pics etc for us...a great experience!
One of the things you forgot to take into account was the fact that Portnoy and Collins play two different genres. Portnoy is heavy metal and a very in-your-face drummer, while Collins is a much more "melodic." The same goes for their solos. Portnoy's are very "look at me" while Collins solo's are more "listenable." Of course, Neil Peart is another fabulous drummer. His solos are kind of a mixture of melody and "wow," which I think is cool. But that's just me.
Brand X!! There is something we do agree on. Check out "Unorthodox Behaviour" from about 76'. The first album and the best. I am still trying to find more video with Collins playing with them here on Youtube. He was only with the band a brief period of time then I think Kenwood Dennard took over.
Brand X...definitely worth listening to.
actually phil collins has some weird offbeat music. A friend of mine was telling about this odd time signature song he had to play for drumlessons. So maybe you should listen a bit more to phill collins as well.
well i would ceazea. Depends on what you listen too. How obvious can it be
i don't think they noticed the lights, they have their eye's closed
wow I guess it's hard to rember every single tab for such a long duo
I agree. That was going to be my other point. He creates some of the best "composition solos". To do a solo without any cymbal crashes except a few at the end is so interesting to me. It would be easy to pull out some more sounds to make a solo more interesting or the typical double bass fluff but his drum duets are composed like a song and not with the "intention" being a "drum solo". If you have ever tried to play in time with another drummer it is usually not an easy thing to do.
You did not read what I wrote very well. I Actually did "recognize". Collins is not anywhere near as "technical" as Portnoy. I do not disagree. Technical is also not better. What I am saying is Portnoy does not not have the kind of sound that the icons do. When you hear Bonham, Peart or Collins play on the radio you know who it is. If I just listened to Portnoy on the radio I would say "great drummer" but I would not him by the sound of his playing. That is the difference. Double bass is fluff.
Get a clue! If you can't recognize Portnoy on the drums then you obviously haven't listened to Dream Theater that much. Phil Collins is a great drummer, but pales in comparison to the technical abilities of Portnoy. Listen to Dream Theater some more and tell me that Phil incorporates odd time signatures, polyrhythms and syncopations (to name a few) like Portnoy does. I think NOT!!
always great showing...
Ok, wow. Phil (and Chester) may not be the *best* strictly speaking (Steve Smith, Vinnie Coliutta and some others) but what he DOES do best is musical compositions with percussion. I love watching the interplay-even though left handed drummers are tough to watch, just don't get how they play backwards :) Each time I see these two guys its so cool to listen to the funk, the power etc. No one puts together a drum *song* like Phil.
TOTALLY AGREE 100%
grandioos!
Man I completely forgot Phil had hair at one point heh. Awesome clip. Thanks for posting it.
As a percussionist, there's nothing I hate worse than lighting engineers flashing the lights during a drum solo and entirely destroying my ability to see what the featured percussionists are doing. Seems to happen every time I go to a concert.
this is boring
man you seem like you never listend to dream theater before Phil COllins got his own style but Portnoy not? Man whatever live in your dreamworld
How can you compare Portnoy to to Phil? That is naive. One is not better just different styles. No one drummer is "the best". Could I recognize Portnoy on the radio playing with a band other then Dream Theater? Probably not. He does not have anything that makes him stand out no real trademarks other then a really good drummer for his style of music. Phil has "his own sound" and that is the mark of a legend.
chester intricute and precice phil desperate and showy
Phil Collins and Neil Peart are probably the two most talented drummers alive today. Chester is a real study in the art, a professional and artist. He can copy Phil's style to a "t". Great post.
Phil looks so cool on here with his gum an all lol. What a fantastic duet i watch this ova an ova again. The timing is out of this world. Phil rules.
i think what makes phil collins one of the best is he has a totally unique sound, its instantly recognisable whenever you hear him
ok noit bad but this doesnt make him the best drumemr in the world He sucks balls Mike Portnoy owns his soul
NASTYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
meserie.
WOW! What a talent! Excellent.
This is mad. Euphoric drumming.
this is a very well executed piece
phil is best this whas my favorite video wen i whas like five yers old
el mejor baterista del mundo no hay dudas, quien otro toca asi? grande phil!!!!!!!!!
How in sync are these two? Amazing to watch. Thanks so much.........
saw them live in the past year. Amazing phil started out with a solo on a chair.
He lives in Nashville.
