This is a video cut from "Trick of The Mind" series aired in the UK. The clip here is taken directly from Season 1 -- Episode 1.

This is one of my favorite segments done by Derren. It explains for the most part how he did achieve the feat, and the trick is quite clever. Don't get too hung up on the ending though; it's merely a trick.

It is quite possible that he, if he had been studying the games, never saw a picture of them.

It is not required to remember all 4 moves all the time. It is enough to remember one player's move (white), go to opponent (black), then take another white and so on. If he ever forget the move he can leave the player for a while and take another look at proper board. No super memory skills are needed.

What is also quite simple to understand is the possibility that the online chess program is able to detect any other chess programs you have running on your PC, thus preventing cheats like this.

I bet they did realize (certainly knew something was up), but the tape was edited for the tv. Top chess players are brilliant of recognizing chess styles & strategies of other players... Besides it's game of asymmetrical information, so not really a fair deal.

Hmmm... would this work for online chess games. Say you play games with two great players at the same time and have them face off with each other?

i think about it like this, say you were playiing chess against me and someone else.according to this you could copy one of our moves and use it on the other right? thats assuming that both chess games are exactly the same. if two differnt games of chess are taking place your couldnt use another games moves, it just wouldnt work

What do you mean? In the beginning, at table 1, Darren doesn't move because he's black. For the first round, he doesn't make a move for tables 1, 2, 3, and 4. He goes to 5, 6, 7, and 8 and sees what those other people do (as black) then does those moves on his second time through.

In 1707, a young girl was out strolling at night when she was pushed down a well. She fell to her death, landing on a metal rod, impaling her through the head. ... He wrote the number of pieces left BEFORE the games were over. And i would think he is a good chess player since hes mentally above the average person by quite a bit.
