i am in love with the beautiful game, and as an american, but also a die hard soccer fanatic (and player) i struggled with the fact that we call it "soccer" here in the states. but i've come to recognize the reality that we will NEVER be able to get our entire country to call it "FOOTBALL" and if i just do it rebelliously, no one is gonna have a CLUE as to what i'm talking about.

The term 'soccer' has been around since about the thirties/forties. I think we (English) probably started it. Its a mild corruption of what we know as 'Association football'. Check out any old magazine/book publications and you will find the title quite often used. Admittedly, the yanks do over use the term. But then again they do have their own game of football. Thats the one that involves mainly catching & throwing. Doh!

Beckham gets criticism but he has done a lot to promote football (soccer) in the States. He has helped the raise football's status over there and that can only be a good thing. More and more fans probably turn out because it's Becks and that in turn can lead to gaining more football fans in the states in the long term and also inspiring kids to take up football at a young age over there rather than the usuall NFL or Baseball.
