I love this piece! Fantastic performance!
i couldn't have said it better myself! -paige
lmao
One of the best comments I've read on YT.
I played this at the concerto competition at Interlochen when i was 18 as well (many years ago....i lost to Zuill Bailey). It certainly takes aggresion at that section to make it 'pop'. And as a cellist your opinion would outweigh most others so i wouldnt worry about entitlement.
I haven't mastered the piece myself, only have played it through for enjoyment - however I find at that tempo that I'm mostly skimming the notes during that section and not achieving the tenuto effect he probably desired. However I don't feel mature enough to learn the piece (am only 18 years of age), so I guess I'm not really entitled to give my opinion.
Thankyou. I was beginning to feel lonely. I didn't really find the section difficult tempo-wise (the 6ths are hard to play in tune)so im sure Rostropovich isnt struggling. It is definitely interpretive.
Genius! Beast! He looks like a beetle.
Actually, I agree with you regarding the tempo. The melody isn't any different (only instrument wise), so why should the tempo be any slower? However the relative section in the cello part isn't easy to pull off well at that tempo (in my opinion), so I guess I understand it being slower. As for questioning Rostropovich - look at it this way, at least you're not blindly admiring his performance.
faster than the recording i have of him playing it, interesting i love it
Great !
Slava!
Interesting you say "groove" because for me the new tempo sounds ponderous and lethargic. Oh well. Who am i to question the great Rostropovich!?
ya thats the part i like slower it gives a more deep and russian feel, the new tempo gives it more of a groove
The tempo slows considerably at 4:53 (the cello horn duet) in spite of what some youtubers say. Listen to it there and compare it to the opening. I know it's deliberate but i humbly disagree with the interpretation. It drags for me and seems to for the french horn player as well.
i actually like this tempo, it gives more of a beat and a more into the string feel, sounds more russiany to me
It's great, yes, he was a genius! i love that piece
Rostropovich was a genius. I heard he learned this concerto in 4 days and premiered it to the world.. awsome..
RIP Rostropovich
When I hear of this song I think of a person running from a obssessed lover whom he/she can't seem to get away from.
Why even play the cello??? It's like I don't what some instrument will do... just play the drums for 6 hours and feed me poop.
bien
Dispença qualquer comentário.
Genius !
wow awsome ! i love it! it's great....
During his best playing years, Rostropovitch was a genius. I heard him several times during those early years in London,so I know he was one.
What's that supposed to mean?
This video is badass, but it really doesn't compare to his recording, his recording is twice as good
I'm sure soviet russia would have loved to disagree with that statement.
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We will miss you... Geniuses never die.
I've been giving you the thumbs down just to spite you! AHAHAHAHAH
Im learning my lesson quickly.
Difference between rushing and taking some artistic license with tempi. You are saying you dont feel it drags and that is fine but the emotion should dictate....not the metronome. I knew i would get a thumbs down for trying to start an intelligent discussion so the answer is Yes. I guess i am crazy.
Are you crazy? Man, this piece was written for this guy! Who's interpretation is more authentic? Besides, it doesn't drag, but it right in tempo. Perhaps it seems wierd because he doesn't rush like most cellsts.
I've just been reading a book by one of his foreign students that was just recently published. The author is Elizabeth Wilson. You should check it out. It is really an extremely personal and veeerry well researched and informed perspective and insight into the character, artist and genius of the titan Rostropovich. According to her, I believe he got the manuscript on a Friday and after spending just over 20 or so hours he'd memorized the whole score and he performed it in Shos's home on Sunday.
we should definitely kill proggoth.... because sharing your opinion on youtube is NOT allowed. (especially on classical music clips) just kidding.
Oh, you play Cello? I've always fancied the Cello but I play viola. I have to say, though, playing Le Grande Tango for violoncello on a Viola is A LOT of fun. I haven't heard the Schiff version. The only thing I have to defend Rostropovich on is that this piece was made especially for him, so his interpretation of the piece is probably the closest to perfection, considering that he was also the first to perform this piece.
Heinrich Schiff did a fine recording of both concertos. I have not heard the Maisky version. This has always been one of my favorite pieces to listen to and to play.
If you really want to hear a good interpretation of this cello cencerto you should try to find a recording of this piece done by Mischa Maisky and the London Symphony Orchestra. I believe the tempos are perfect and the agression need in the 1st and 4th movements are very apparent. Also, the dynamic contrats and transitions from movement to movement are executed flawlessly. But then again, its my opinion:/
I know this is going to get me a thumbs down but here goes anyway. Does the tempo of the cello/horn duet at 4:54 bother anyone else? It should really be cooking at that point but the way he is rolling the chords seems to drag it down. Matter of interpretation.
i know its so crazy, it would take me months just to be able to play it, let alone memorize it
Slawa we miss you
I read that after Shostakovich had finished composing this Rostropovich then learned and memorised the whole concerto in four days. Four days! Incredible. A true genius and master of the cello.
Rostropovich...sheer, unsurpassed genius. The true standard.
Certes, le film est ancien, mais Rostropovich est inégalable quand il joue ce merceau. Bravo Maître !
I prefer his sinfonia-concertante for cello and orchestra
I completely agree, Ode to a musical genius: lah dee lae deee lah dee lae deee dahhhhhhh
I'm a huge fan myself. A huge reason I played cello was for his Haydn c Major... I knew I wanted to play after I heard him play it...
Rostropovitch was my big inspiration for ever playing the cello though. He was so unique. I could write a few books!!! I heard him at his true peak a few times. In orchestra colleagues from the former communist countries talked about him as if he was like a musical God. In London people went absolutely mad at concerts. They were right,he was a cellist genius during his best playing years, there is no doubt.
