It's called mindfulness meditation, or in buddhist: Samatha/Vipassana.
For socialphobia: Some tactics Navy Seals use in dealing with fear. I suppose you can apply these to social situations. Goal setting, focusing on specific tasks. Example, have several topics that your interested in that you would like to discuss or gather ideas. Visualizing. This is like rehearsing. Im not a fan of this one for social situations, but may work for you. Arousal control. Deep steady EXHALES simulate relaxation.
socialphobia? being timid in a social setting? so you get quiet and then come off as being rude cuz your'e not talking is that what youre talking about cuz..it happens to some people
Do they ever offer a solution to the socialphobia problem? What type of meditation is used?
moTHA FUCKA IM EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL A MILI A MILI
Wow. This is really quite a nice presentation. Thanks for posting this! David Peterzell
A brilliant presentation - interesting and informative. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Google "Robert C. Scaer brain state technologies" for another awesome presentation on neurological mammalian processes related to trauma.
This is a great, great presentation. I wish all presenters could be so well done.
Kabat-Zinn is a wonderful author and obviously also a leader in this field but I find this speaker is a much better lecturer. He gets to the point, obviously has planned his presentation in advance in a way that will transfer essential knowledge, and is not meandering and random.
I am really happy to see that neuroscience is digging deeper into mindful meditation with the aim to help people suffering from mental disorder.
fascinating! i need this for my case pres in neuro thanks!
Obviously, we observe a true shift in paradigm of psychotherapy: the making of neuropsychotherapy. What is "exposure"? Skinner and Wolpe didn't believe we had to know nothing about "the black box" - now we do! And that knowledge will change, and it'll change therapy. "Exposure" is not only a "reciprocal inhibition" it is a psychological treatment technic that change neural structures. And that's not has not necessarilly be called "behavioural" therapy - it has to be called "neuropsychotherapy".
In relation to this check out The New Paradigm in Psychology by Ruben Feldman Gonzalez. He talks about Unitary Perception which Jiddu Krishnamurti called meditation. It is not a technique because techniques are still within thought. Domhnall O Brien
my Psychologist mentioned this to me on my last visit....i'm intrigued...
Agreed, there. I'm more concerned with overprescription for more mild cases in which these kinds of therapies would be more helpful or good at the very least as an adjunct to medication.
I agree with you. But in my opinion, drugs are not so effective as they don't address the cause/root of the mental illnesses but with their effects/symptoms. Drugs are very usefull in case of severe mental illnesses though.
Fascinating. There also appears to be a growing body of evidence that these types of therapy cause real change in synaptic connections rather than a change in chemical "balance". I feel that psychotropic medications are woefully inept at causing plastic synaptic change which is in many cases the culprit causing chemical "imbalance". Although drugs can help to allow one to function, I don't think they should be substituted for psychotherapy in patients for whom it would help.
I think this technique -"observer state" of the mind- is a much better alternative instead of drugs and can lead to a greater flexibility and control of the mind . Of course it requires a lot of practice and discipline as well but the benefits are great and you'll save a lot of money which otherwise you'd have paid to the therapists. A question: what is the difference between mindfulness meditation and vipassana? Aren't they the same thing?

Nice video
GOOGLE 4 PRESIDENT!! y not.. it already rules the world lol
Very dry presentation. Not for humans but for neo-cyber-mutant-humanoids. Might be something said under the psuedo-smart jargon.
Also, see Sara Lazar.
Go to the Mind and Life website and you'll find info on Goldin and other researchers (Make sure to check out Richard Davidson ...) in the field.
Wow, you guys are pretty smart.
extremly cool and a must watch. Should get contextualized more integral on the long run.
You possibly have already done this, but I would strongly advise first watching one of Dr Jon Kabat-Zinns videos on youtube - he is an astonishing man with such incredble warmth. I'm in the process of reading one of his first books - Full Catastrophe Living. I've found it to be wonderful. Watch one of his videos, and see for yourself.
Google rocks man. Meditation/mindfulness rocks.
Thanks Google :)
good talk for the most part, but the cultural assumptions are naiive and perhaps regressive, even racial-again, such science has to converse better with the humanities-
I was actually hoping someone may have access to Philippe Goldin reference page... because some of those studies are exactly what I have been looking for to assist with a phenomenological study on the Meditative experience. This is such a facinating area of study and I would really like to delve into some of those studies more closely. Be Happy.
Thankyou for your response I am actually already a vipassana practitioner and have been for some time, but thankyou at least there are other people on the same page.
Do a search for "mindfulness in plain english".
This was one of the most fascinating studies I have every seen... Where am I able to get more information on this particular research. I find going through the internet so arduous in attempting to find information on mindfulness and meditation. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. But thankyou so much for posting this on You-Tube.
Some good books on this topic and topics like it: Destructive Emotions: How Can We Overcome Them? A Scientific Dialogue with the Dalai Lama Narrated by Daniel Goleman The Universe in a Single Atom by His Holiness The Dalai Lama Good talk, see you out there.
