Coffee and Cigarettes is a 2003 independent film directed by Jim Jarmusch. The film consists of eleven short stories which share coffee and cigarettes as a common thread.
In this segment musicians Iggy Pop and Tom Waits pretend to play themselves, smoke cigarettes to celebrate that they quit smoking, drink some coffee and have an awkward conversation.

Look at 3.30 and compare with the famous Tom Cruise "pfffuuiittt" interview ! Could it be that actually Tom Cruise is indeed more fucked up than Iggy Pop ? I believe so.

haha man if i saw tom waits and iggy pop hanging out at a coffee shop i'd have a fucking heart attack. i'd sit down and just start blabbing my mouth off about the progression of the blues band and iggy on punk and glam rock and what kind of cigarettes they liked and what they drank, and their opinion on counterculture in the 60s on up and all that shit. man i bet after jarmusch said "cut" they just started having a sweet conversation.

agreed on Nighthawks, I just bought that cd for the waitstaff at my favorite all-night cafe because they are all so sweet and always let me bum cigarettes. That album just never goes out of style...

Tom Waits has aged a lot since this was filmed. Iggy on the other hand hasn't aged since about 1980.

Man I am so happy I have found this. I first saw this about 5/6 yeas ago. I was home alone late one night, stoned off my head and this short movie came on. I could hardly remember any of it other than Iggy Pop and Tom Waits were in it and it was funny as hell. Fucking great.

The whole point of this would be like music fans sitting around together thinking things like "Hey, what if Iggy Pop & Tom Waits hung out together? I wonder what they'd talk about." And this is it. They're just two normal guys like everyone else. That being said; Waits is the coolest mother fucker on the planet.

the funny thing here is, the jukebox as you mentioned, the song playing is called Saw Saint or something. it's a waits number. and waits' little flourish at the end gives it away. the entire movie is like a set of inside jokes between friends. wouldnt you want to do something like this witht yr friends?

i guess if you're a tom waits fan, it comes across as one of those gem like moments.
especially since he's been in a few jarmusch films from his early days. Down By Law for example. i guess the hallmark of the jarmusch cinema is it's getting-nowhere, moving-sideways kinda feel. many friends i know can't sit through them.
and the adlibbed bit about tracheaectomy with a ball-pen, etc - mr. waits in a classic mood.

What's so great about this thing? Nothing, if you're all about plot. But if you're about great character, dialogue and atmosphere, then what's great is all of the above. What chemistry these two have together, and soooo funny and awkward. Neither of them are on the jukebox. Funny.

While auteurs like this director made one good film followed by indulgent stuff, while having a studio deal. My goals are less lofty: I just want the studio's restaurant expense account, and I'll spare people ever watching the film.
