| i have one absess and the explanation my Dr. told me is that in my case the hair doesn't grow to the outside but it grows to the inside of the skin and that causes the infection. |

| they have to pack it so that the hole where the abcess was heals from the inside out to prevent air bubbles and infections etc. it also acts as a sponge to absorb remaining puss and other bodily fluids. |

| it's called a 'wick'. made of gauze or similar material, and it's supposed to absorb any puss and blood left in the wound to avoid infection again. i think you wait a week, or however is suggested, to pull it out. |
