Chris: Oh, yes, you're back here at 969, I'm Chris. Now today we're talking to a huge, huge rock group from San Diego, California, who made a big name for themselves back in 2003 with an album called, "The Beautiful Letdown," and two huge hits, "Dare You To Move" and "Meant To Live." Today Lauren's talking with Switchfoot.

Lauren: Switchfoot has sold millions of records and has been making music together for over a decade. Now the band prides themselves in being really nice guys devoted to their Christian faith. And today we're going to talk to the guys about the role their faith plays in writing music and which comical instrument made an appearance on their brand new record, "Oh! Gravity."

Lauren: I want to talk about Oh! Gravity. because you guys did a cowbell, more cowbell contest, right?

Tim: Yeah.

Lauren: So who, you picked, there's one song with cowbell, or is there a couple?

Tim: I tried to win the contest, I couldn't get on the record playing cowbell.

Chad: Yeah, we flew this girl out, her name's actually in the record.

Tim: Cowbell performed by...

Chad: Yeah, and it was a wonderful performance with the cowbell.

Lauren: You had to teach her? Was she like a natural cowbellist.

Tim: Um, she had a lot of natural spunk to her, but Jerome is our resident cowbell instructor. I think, I don't know if he's a black belt, but he's definitely, like maybe a brown belt.

Lauren: Well it's an underrated instrument because people think it's a joke, but there are alot of great, classic songs with cowbells that people don't know.

Tim: Right.

Lauren: Now you're in the books for one of those.

Tim: But I still think it's a joke.
--
Tim: We've always been honest about who we are. We're believers, I'm a believer, and these songs are a direct reflection of who we are as people. And certainly our belief in Jesus plays a large role in who we are. But I think the moment you put any sort of a label on your music, it can limit the scope of what you're trying to do as an artist. You know, we've been labelled a political band and other things too. You know, they're all complimentary but at the same time if that's all you are, it's really a box and can be confining. So, you know, we've never shied away from it, but we want to be writing songs that are for everybody.
--
Tim: And it's amazing that something very personal can be very universal. You know, we were in Europe a couple of weeks ago. To have people in Germany that don't really even speak English singing along, and you can tell these songs really meant something to them. You know, and a song that originated at 2am, trying to figure out the meaning of life, can translate all cultures.
--
Lauren: You guys have had a lot of hits, like big radio hits with a lot of airplay. Does that ever, do you ever think about that whether it starts to lose it's meaning the more and more it gets out there or is that a good thing?

Tim: It's, you know it's something that I think a lot of bands wrestle with, is the idea that you want to communicate and that's the goal. And so to be having a lot of people hear your songs and buy your record, I mean, that's such a compliment--to feel like your music's connecting. But, you know, I remember being in junior high and highschool and the moment your favourite band became successful you were like, "Aw, man." You know, so you kind of walk that line and a lot of my heroes have only sold 500 copies, or maybe 1000 copies, you know? And suddenly to be selling millions of records is--it's just a new territory that we never expected. But, you know it's a compliment.
--
Lauren: Well you guys have a lot coming up. A big tour, you're in Vancouver tonight and the rest of Canada for the rest of the month. Anything else you want to let us know about?

Tim: Oh, Canada.

Lauren: We have a long road ahead.

Tim: We like Canada?

Lauren: Yeah, do you?

Tim: We'll find out if we like Canada in the winter. But, we do like Canada.

Lauren: Well, to be honest, I have no idea what it's like east of here so I wish you all the best.

Tim: Well I know there's a warm wave pool at the West Edmonton mall, so--

Chad: Yea.

Lauren: Oh, you're gonna surf that up? Can you surf on there, I don't know.

Tim: I don't think you can surf there. You can splash around and pretend, you know.

Lauren: Cool, well have a great time. Everybody check out Oh! Gravity., the new album from Switchfoot. Thanks a lot guys.

Chad: Thank you.

Tim: Thanks for having us.

heba1611

yea i agree too im not christian and it just feels like certian people shudnt be listening to their songs and they said they dont want that thats why they dont like calling themselves a christian band and when i listen to their songs and their lyrics it feels like they r talkin generally abwt life whether ur a christian or not and thats the best part that it reli get 2 u n they r unlike other christian bands aswell they r awesome i luv them <3

twiotterluv

no offense to anoyone but love switchfoot they are awesome but im no christian and when ppl say that its chrsiitan band ans all i dont .. think thats very fair bc im no chrsitian and i luve them and i wana listen to them but serisouly if u sya they'r eone type of band makes ppl feel liek they shouldnt listen to them bc they are goign for acertain aduicence so i dont think should be labbelled chrsiitan just be a badn thats all =] bc otherwide makes ppl feel like they shouldnt listen to them

IpCrackle

If you label something "Christian," it tends to turn people off and make them not listen to it and think it's bad. Switchfoot doesn't want their music labeled Christian (they're not denying faith in Jesus) because non-Christians would be more likely to listen to it, thus making them less reluctant to get a dose of truth. It's quite a Christian intent to not be labeled Christian.

beautyofgrace10

i'm sorry but you need to explain me that! i don't know why they don't want to label as a chritian?

beautyofgrace10

why you don't search it in youtube and ask then?

IpCrackle

I'm sorry, but switchfoot isn't only my favorite artist, they're my heroes. The reason they don't want to be labeled as Christian or political music is because that's what they want to bring people into. And Jon's voice is just so good, they're awesome!

DQMWLover

Tim is so amazing. I love how he mentioned their belief in Jesus. That makes me love them even more.
